Hi, I know I post questions with probably very obvious answers, but I am learning and trying to verify what I am seeing. I think I see a die break that started at the top of the hornet's nest? Or is it a scratch? Thanks!
Hornets nests (a.k.a. beehives) are often the start of die cracks. Once the die chip reaches back around to Monticello and becomes large, it will often fork outwards to the rim. The most common weak point for die cracks extending to the rim is the corner of Monticello. The right angle corner probably takes a huge amount of striking stress.
The coin was too bright to see details using my microscope, so I grayed it to see the detail of the lines. I am getting a new microscope tomorrow and will try to get detail with that one.
