What do you grade this? Do you think it would straight-grade?

no I don't believe it would straight grade. So you wouldn't have bought the knob ear I posted but are ok buying this crappier looking coin? Interesting..

No way it straight grades.

Quote: So you wouldn't have bought the knob ear I posted but are ok buying this crappier looking coin? Jerry, I'm no expert but no one can deny this coin looks far better than the one you posted. Even you must have been able to see the obvious cleaning job on that one. I understand if you bought it because it's a hard-to-find variety, though. I'm more of a type collector.

the surfaces on the knob ear were smooth and undamaged like your coin. The rims did not show areas of red copper and the central part of your coin on reverse looks to had ED with some pitting. The knob ear may have been cleaned but it still looks far better.

Very abused VF30. Damaged, cleaned, corroded.
Not the worst I've seen, but it's definitely got major issues.
You can buy much nicer late date Large Cents in similar grades for not a lot of money, so this would be an instant "junk box" coin for me.

No way that would grade straight. I understand buying on a budget (I have to as well), but I'd have had to pass on this one and it's a date that I need.

I'll say VF details (cleaned).

VF details (cleaned) plus there are several hits on both sides. the punch at star 12 was intentional. they are going to get this one for the cleaning or PMD. I'm hoping after several posts that you are starting to pick up on some of these issues like cleaning and damage note the flat/dull surfaces that are washed out with a green hue. this is a clear indicator of a cleaning

It's best to post your opinions on other coins in the threads relevant to those coins. Mini rant (not directed at the quoted poster!) I think sometimes CCF members forget that we're here to offer our opinions and advice in regards to grading, and not to criticize other members' purchasing decisions. By all means, we should be honest and open, but our criticism should be directed at the coin and not at the person who bought it (we're here to judge the coin, not the poster.) If a CCF member wants to offer a grade opinion, or any other insight, that's wonderful and welcomed, but I'm starting to see more replies that basically amount to "you're an idiot" and "you wasted your money" and "why would you ever buy that coin." There's ways to educate collectors to help them make wiser purchasing decisions that don't involve belittling them.

well said paralyze. Everyone has a different way of looking at and evaluating coins. Not an exact science. I never thought the knob ear coin "looked like crap" and I probably shouldn't have even offered an opinion on the 1856 coin. I have bought hundreds of large cents over the last 10 or 15 years. Kept some and sold most. I think I have a decent grasp of what a coin might sell for in different conditions. I believe sick puppy has a ways to go in the learning and grading department.
