I am looking at selling some surplus gold eagles I have, for their numismatic value. Was keeping them to perhaps trade for others some day. But it is looking like soon I may as well melt them. Holding on to extras and missing other coins I care about is not a good choice.
Have been looking at Great Collections or some other auction site. But I have found a problem. The national post here refuses to insure shipping to the US. I was given the impression that there is a big theft problem with valuable parcels sent there. I am not going to ship double eagles uninsured. Any european here has recent experience with shipping there?
Are there trustworthy services for insured shipping from the EU to the US? I have DHL and UPS as alternatives. But if there are big problems with shipping now, then as I was saying I perhaps should simply send to the foundry here what I do not care to keep. A likely MS63 1904 or even an MS64 does not seem worth the risk of shipping. I hate the idea of melting coins. Even common coins. But is is better than having them stolen. Or missing on others I really want.

I purchased a few expensive notes from Portugal and all came in a small envelope with tracking, I got all, although one took over a month. It stayed in customs in the US for 3 weeks.
With Gold Eagles I would ship them DHL, but beware of customs.

Thank you. I can go to DHL check their conditions. It looks like they have an office not far.
I had read there were no import duties for numismatic items in the US. You are warning only about delays?

How about selling them to a coin dealer/shop in Portugal? I am sure American Gold Eagles are in demand in Portugal.

Unnecessary to assume risk shipping . Sell them to a legit dealer in your country . Portugal and Italy are two of the most unreliable Postal services in the world. Quite frankly full of sticky fingers .

Quote: How about selling them to a coin dealer/shop in Portugal? I am sure American Gold Eagles are in demand in Portugal. No. They are treated as bullion coins here no matter the condition. A few of valuable dates may be slabbed and sold outside by dealers. All when buying and most when selling will only value extra the rare dates. Not rare mint conditions. It is a hassle, a long wait and expensive to send coins for grading. I picked more that one of each type because it was a shame to let very good coins go to melt. Now the high gold prices are bringing out other coins that interest me. It makes sense to part with these and buy the portuguese ones I focus on. But the foundry still pays the better price if I sell here. Quote: Portugal and Italy are two of the most unreliable Postal services in the world. Quite frankly full of sticky fingers . Internally I have not had trouble and there is insurance. It is available also for countries within the EU. But for many destinations outside they ended the option to insure parcels. Thank you for that information. I think it explains why the ceased insuring parcels. In you experience that includes the ones like DHL, or only the national post?

I don't understand your question. National Post always has tariffs for fast delivery (EMS) as well as for delivery with insurance. The problem may arise only if the post office refuses to take responsibility for a parcel that is already outside their jurisdiction (for example, after passing through customs control in Portgualia). The situation here in Russia is similar. The operator always says that if there are any problems with an international parcel, it is necessary to contact the postal service of the destination country. P.S.It looks like my last trip to Germany with the cap of the national hockey team was lost somewhere in Berlin. The postal workers were rude to the recipient and I was told to contact the German post.

An update. I went to DHL and they just refuse to ship what they call valuables there. Seek a specialized company, they say.
Much too troublesome to sell online. I do not know how dealers do it. Perhaps they just do not care and not declare and insure what they ship. I do not care for careless shipping and risk. And after seeing the talk here about the mess with an auction and the trickiness of contracts I stand discouraged. Melt price it is for the common 1904. If I ever want to sell the nicer american coins I have it is either going there personally or selling here personally. It appears the globalization thing is going backwards now.

Thank you very much. I did not know Bonhams had an office in Lisbon.
The other I knew, nice shop. And they have a larger stock than what they announce in the web site. I have visited them. They will have an option on those I sell. Better than selling for melt, if they take an interest.
