Is the "speared bison" nickel, 2005D a recognized variety? Is it easy to recognize? The pics I've seen and accounts I've read, make it seem easily recognizable, and a fairly common die flaw. Yet, after 9 boxes of nickels...ZERO.

I have 5 sets dated Feb and sometimes when I get bored I open one to look through them as for a recgnized variety I cannot say.

According to what I know it is a recognized variety. I have seen them graded by PCGS. In 2005 I knew someone that went through 3 boxes of 2005 D Buffalo nickels and found two.

If I find one it is going to be added to my collection .... if I don't, I won't care.
I don't think it's an instant classic coin. I say "bah" to that, and the detached legs as well.

Recognized it is...or at least was at one time. problem is, it is not a variety at all, and in fact it isn't even really an error. It's a simple gouge created by a die hit. It spiraled out of control in value when someone had the luck of getting PCGS to recognize it, but its popularity was a fad and it soon fell out of favor of most collectors. I don't know what the market is for the currently, but I would suspect much lower than it was in 2005 when it was all the craze.

I've only started caring...just a bit ever since wheezydog pretty much wiped out my entire "needs" list for my jeffersons. yes, i'll still be looking through boxes on the off chance of being able to upgrade my nearly completed set, but I still like the thrill of being on the hunt for something. if I never add one to my collection, i'll be fine. but it would be pretty fun to be able to pull one from circulation too.

I read somewhere online (not here) that the majority of these nickels were sent to banks in East Texas. (EXACTLY where I am) So I've been checking all of the ones I happen to see just in case. If that info was true, I should have a pretty good chance of finding one even today.
