I came across a quarter with 2000 Massachusetts on one side and 2001 Rhode Island on the other side. Sounds like an error to me?

I'm guessing you are skeptical. I wish there was a way to show both sides at once. Should I send it to be graded?

Suggest placing the coin in front of a mirror and taking a photo.

There's a chance the coin has been 'doctored'. Wouldn't be the first time someone has done that. Some magician coins come to mind.

If you feel you have a legit rarity, consider submitting it to a reputable 3rd party grading/assessment service. If you do, please let us know the result. Thanks.

Take a picture of it in front of a mirror. Weigh it. Carefully examine it for a seam in the edge or concealed around the rim. I'm skeptical because I didn't think it was physically possible to put a reverse die into both sides of the coin press. Edit to add that there is a suspiciously deep groove at the rim near Rhode Island.

Please use the mirror method. A couple good close ups would also help.

Best I can do. Camera wants to focus on one but not both.

The edge looks like every other quarter. I have a box of about 2000 quarters sitting next to me and they all look the same. Even the weight is the same.

Suggest not handling the coin with what appear to be metal tweezers--may leave unwanted nicks and scratches.

The coin came out of a roll. Appears to be well circulated.

Here's an article from the PCGS site, written by Ken Potter, that will help to explain what you most likely have.

It is probably a Magician's coin. I believe I can see the seam inside the rim of the RI side.

Must be a Magician's coin, with a fine seamaround the perimeter on one side or the other.
