So I finally received a 2008 Sacagawea dollar with the new reverse and the edge lettering. My question relates to how many of these have actually reached circulation. Were these actually released or was the one that I found put into circulation by a collector?

The new Sacagawea Coin is new for 2009 not 2008. And it has been renamed " The Native American dollar Coin", though the obverse retains Sacagawea's likeness, each reverse each year will contain a new design depicting an accomplishment/contribution of Native Americans. They are bein released for circulation for the first time in several years this year of 2009, it's inaugural year with the redesign.

Most likely put by a collector, since the banks certainly don't order them for commercial uses and distributes them as "$1" withdraws (like when you go to the bank and ask for $1s).

They are available via the Direct Ship program so that is the main way they are being released into commerce.

eaglefoot- ah thanks for the info. In all honesty, mine has a rim nick right over the 9 of 2009 so that it looks like an 8. haha. Do you have any idea as to how high the mintage shall be on this coin?

since they are supposed to be a circulating coin the mintage can go way up because there is no limit on how many they can mint, they will just mint as many as is needed all the way up until the end of he year

Bryan1315- thanks for thin info. But wouldn't this mintage be kept down by the fact that "demand" would be met by the tons of Presidential dollars that are being produced?

Well awhile back I got a direct shipped box of Native American dollars. Then they were out you could not get these anymore. Now they have been available for awhile again. The ones I got were D mnts bt I did trade for a couple rolls of D mints. Now that I am back in PA was thinking of getting another box of them to see if they are P mints if I do there will be more back in circulation then especially if they turn out to be D mints again.

awhile back I got a box from Direct Ship Opened 1 roll found out it was "d" Mint I kept a roll + then returned the rest to my credit union unopened as they have not been able to order them. I currently have another box on the way hoping for "P" mint and will do the same with it. Mintage figures show very few "D" mint made to date but that will change http://www.usmint.gov/about_the_min...09#starthere
