Question about a 1969 S Lincoln Cent. I'm wondering if this would be considered an error coin? The "of" in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, is virtually missing. Also, the S looks strange, at least to me, and is that a "floating roof" on the back? Most likely not, but I'm curious. See photos BTW, I'm not a coin collector per se, although my father was. As a kid my family used to sit around the kitchen table sorting through rolls of coins my dad would buy at the bank. If memory serves, we were especially looking for a 50 D. I don't remember ever finding one. My wife and I used to play poker with another couple and use pennies. I have a gallon jug full of pennies, and decided to sort them into decades. This coin is one of the first penny's I looked at, only because it is from the 60's. Are there any other coins I might look for as I go through the jug? Thanks for your review and information.

To CCF! The S mint mark might have taken a hit from circulation. Looks like a minor Struck Through Grease error, on the reverse.
Errers and Varietys.

Thank you for the information. As a in-experienced collector I appreciate the link. Makes sense to me. I don't believe this coin is worth anything, but it is interesting how these errors occur. Thanks again.

Welcome to the family and don't forget that piece of history is in fact worth 1 cent at any place that still takes cash. The copper it's made of is worth double that amount. And how much fun was it to find this forum and interact with us? Keep looking and keep coming back!

Struck in grease or because of the bust of Lincolns bust taking up a lot of material it made the reverse strike light.

to the CCF Quote: the bust of Lincolns bust taking up a lot of material it made the reverse strike light That is true throughout the Lincoln series from 1909 to 2008.

It does seem to have a floating roof, and the missing E in E Pluribus is kind of cool. I would keep it for that but I don't see much extra value. I think the S just took a circulation hit.

I think the weakness of the top of the reverse is sue to the obverse design of the bust taking up most on the metal to form, and not leaving enough to fully strike up the reverse device elements.

with Dearborn. A common occurrence with Lincoln cents.
