The Bank of Ireland struck several silver tokens between 1804 and 1813 for circulation as "necessity coinage." This example is Ireland's only 1808-dated issue and its only halfcrown, or "XXX Pence Irish." My VF specimen weighs in at 12.5g, which is notably 1.5-2.5g underweight in comparison to the regal halfcrowns of the Kings George II and III, and features the mushy strike and planchet lamination/flecking so typical of the series.

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all!

Oh, I bet the English loved that! Someone probably hanged for creating those, using George3 on the "obverse".

There weren't many coins that represented the value of a half crown as thirty pence. It was much more common to see the value - two shillings sixpence - as 2s. 6d. if it had to be spelled out on a coin.

After decimalization, the half crown was revalued at 12.5 new pence.

Here is one of the few other coins or tokens to use thirty pence (in the form of XXX) - also Irish!
