How common are 1982 copper coins. Obviously I am a newbie to this. However I am working hard to get these coins that were left to me in order. I am working on the 1980's group of pennies at the moment. I noticed that a large portion of them had a slightly brighter almost redish tone to them. All of them were 1982 D and 1982 no mint mark. I started to wiegh them and saw that each one weighed about 3.1 grams. From what I read they should weigh around 2.5 as they transitioned to mostly zink that year. I saw that a few were accidentally struck with copper and released to circulation. But I seem to have a lot of them. And still have more to go through. Does anyone know how many were struck in copper?

JD1900, the Denver mint did not begin striking zinc cents until October 1982, so they struck copper cents for 9 months.
Copper cents were struck at West Point, San Francisco, and Philadelphia - none of which have mint marks - but I can't find specific figures for how many were minted.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

all the coins you presentd above are large date copper coins, yes - pretty common. The one you (we all) want to find is the Small date Denver copper cent.

Yep, as stated, the 82-D small date copper is the rare one - I think only TWO have ever been found.

Yes, as far as I know there are still only two 1982-D small date bronze known. https://www.numismaticnews.net/worl...t-discovered is a good summary of all of these and why they happened. I recall finding all 7 a few years ago and I put them back into circulation. It's been five years since the second rare one was found. It's possible there's another one out there, but with all the people searching for them and no more found, it seems like a waste of time to me.

As a side note to what others have said, there are some Philadelphia varieties in copper. Not very valuable but fun to come across.

There is one small date zinc DDR that is hard to find and desirable (moderately valuable in BU).
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.
