Questionable authenticity. Has the overall appearance of a cast counterfeit example.

Real, possibly cleaned, F15 or thereabouts.

Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I'm not convinced this one is genuine. The back leg does not match the PCGS genuine marker photo. Couple other features on the missing leg also do not look right.

The issue for me is the overall roughness of OP's coin, particularly in the date, designer's initial, etc.
The markers are there (weak back leg, eroded neck, die markers under belly, EPU is not touching buffalo) but the overall appearance of the coin is just a bit off. It seems to be a bit "crude" by way of comparison.
I don't think it's an altered 1937-D, for sure, but I am slightly suspicious of the coin as a whole.

It looks genuine to me—all the markers are present. I'd say F-15.

if authentic I think the reverse is VF20 and the obv maybe a tad higher which should hold the overall grade to VF20. I can't get it above 20 though
in any case the coin should be authenticated and slabbed to confirm what you have and its possible value
