A recent pickup here with a good story that the sellers dad plucked it out of circulation in 1970. He remembers there being a lot more luster on the reverse but environmental exposure has dulled it over time. It was in a dollar flip so maybe too much air exposure in there or something. Interesting that there is not a lot of strike weakness which you normally see with these errors here. Weighs 4.59g

Cool coin!

What you have here is a '1979-D Red Eagle Washington quarter.' And a nice one at that!

I have a '1979 (P) Washington as a Red Head Quater' around here somewhere. You can see a thumbnail image of mine in my signature file. These are always an eye catcher, especially when uncirculated. It's nice to see luster on both the clad layer and on the copper core!

Thanks Yokozuna! I think it would be fun to own the same year and mint coin with opposite side missing clad layer. So if I see a 79-D red eagle I'll let you know.

Congratulations on the pickup. You can see the original red around the devices.

I saw a post some where recently where the person posted their 48th Washington quarter with a missing clad layer in their set. All had been slabbed by NGC.

It's a neat coin in very nice condition. Are you going to have it graded?

Thanks Brandmeister! While I am curious what this would grade, I rarely send coins in so I doubt it.
