Bought what was claimed to be an FS-501 S/S RPM Buffalo nickel last week because it appeared to have a 3rd S punched horizontally in the C in CENTS and I thought it was a new S/S/S variety.

Took some images and it does indeed look like a 3rd S.

After looking at other FS-501s in my collection and online, the horizontal S shaped markings may just be an FS-501 die marker.

The marker ranges from strong to weak on various specimens, likely based on strength of strike and Die Deterioration over time.

It would be cool if the FS-501 is really an S/S/S with a far North S as a feature, but I don't have the expertise to be certain.

Nice RPM! I think what you're seeing is Pareidolia, on the C.

Could you post a couple of photos of the other 501s in your set showing this anomaly? You may be on to something interesting.
