So I found out there is a small coin show once a month in my city. I've hesitated going because I'm not really there to buy or sell, I'm there to learn. But not sure WHAT. I do know not to take up people's time when there is a lot going on at their table. But I do want to observe what's going on.

I've heard everything from "coin dealers are mean if you're not buying" to "be careful they will take advantage of your lack of knowledge." I have some questions about some of my father and father in laws coins, but I don't want to sell them I want to know about them. Is it not okay to ask?

I guess what I'm asking is, what questions do I ask? I don't wanna look stupid but when it comes to coins I am. I want to learn but WHAT? What is your advise for this first experience? I'm nervous and excited at the same time. And by the way, it's TOMORROW.

Ask your question here on CCF. Post good photos,ask your question in detail,one coin per thread.Coin shows are mainly for dealers to sell their stuff and to a lesser degree buy stuff. Do not sell any of your coins not knowing the values and don't buy without knowing values.

w/ both ijn & John1

Used car salesmen are rude when you're looking & not buying, but my experience w/ numismatists & coin dealers have always been favorable.

Tell the dealers that this is your first show and you are there to learn about collecting. Any dealer worth talking with will jump at the chance to help you if they aren't super busy. Beware! Coin shows are like combination toy/candy shows for coin hounds - you should have a great time.

Good advise about just showing up and soaking it all in. Also good advice to ask your questions here, one coin at a time, as we have world-class experts who will help.

Y'all it was ahhhhmazing!!! I know I had the "deer in the headlights" look, but I couldn't help it. They were all sooooo nice and helpful! I don't really have anything of value, but a dealer found a variety I didn't know to look for. An 1882 O over S Morgan dollar! (I took a few of those in my purse with me). Not worth a lot, but exciting to me. Can't wait to go back. Thank you for your help and guidance. I was nervous.#128556;

@John1 I did look a while back. I'll check again. I've got coins coming out my ears not sure what to keep and what to let go of. I've personally never been able to find error coins but it does interest me which is why I keep everything. Pennies (old Indian head, wheat & modern but not shield), nickels (old V nickels, buffalo and Jefferson), dimes (mercury and Roosevelt), quarters, half dollars and dollar coins (old Morgan and Peace dollars).

Should I roll and return anything later than 1964? I'm a little discouraged with it because I still don't know what I like the most. I'm not crazy about nickels and dimes unless they are valuable which mine are not. I will keep the old ones in the collection books, but other than that, I'm kind of at a loss with it.

There were some super nice dealers at the show willing to let me trade my proof sets for valuable coins. Regarding that, do I just go off the Red Book price for them?

Sorry. Didn't mean to write a novel here. Just searching for direction..

Coins shows are very fun to go to, but I usually make a list of what I might want to by first a to not get side tracked.

Red Book values are high. Check ebay sold values.
