Every once in a while, I find nickels like this during my coin roll hunts. That is definitely metal folded between the rim and the lettering. I can't move it with a bamboo skewer, so it isn't dirt or debris. I don't think the feature was caused by Wrapping Machine Damage, unless the scrapes were worn smooth by circulation.

I was under the impression that rim fins happen to the outside edge of the rim, by pushing rim metal between the die and the collar. So what is this thing, exactly? If memory serves, it seems to happen on 1970s nickels, although I think I've seen it on 1964 nickels as well.

Doing some more reading. Possible it is a rolling fold a.k.a. a blanking burr. The blank punch is dull and doesn't cut cleanly through the sheet metal. This leaves a fin of metal protruding upwards, which is then folded over by the upset mill.

However, the examples I am seeing have the lettering struck directly into the folded metal. It seems unusual here that the metal appears folded over the lettering after the letters are fully formed (although maybe that isn't the case, I don't know enough about planchet formation to say that for certain).

Edit: added full obverse and reverse pics. Maybe Gumball Machine Damage? The letters have taken some scraping.

I hadn't been searching for other denominations, just nickels. So the Rim Fin forms during striking, and then gets folded over and crushed by circulation?

This is simply post-strike damage. Metal has been relocated from the edge and rim of the coin toward the peripheral letters in the form of a thin apron.
