I've seen this quite often. Probably due to over polishing the dies.

Agree, likely a polishing issue.

Not saying it is, but a polished Y is a PUP on a 70S small date. Can we get a closeup of the date?

Yes - like stated as over polishing as the large dates have the bold LIBERTY......

The Y has been abraded or a slightly Grease Filled Die, not a small date. Nothing special. Large and small date examples are from LCR.

I'm thinking that it might be an over polished die issue.

over polishing makes the letters skinnier - grease filled makes letters fatter

How does a Grease Filled Die make letters "fatter"?

If grease fills the die cavity there is less volume for the metal to flow into, to the point some letters disappear.

Grease has a ton of 'bad' calories...makes me fatter, yes.

Fills the bottom of the letters in the die and the grease makes the letters fatter....... And please, next time be a bit nicer when you want to ask me a question, thank you! Obviously Dr. Cooper has to get back on here.

EDIT: FATTER - excuse me - obviously proper terminology is WIDER,

I personally think the viscosity of the grease has everything to do with the outcome of what the devices look like on the coin. I think it can thin it or make it look "fatter". Just my personal opinion though, as a mere novice. As for Petes reply, I did not feel any unnicety about it, thought it was straight forward and nice.

Unnicety, I think I just made a new word!

Marve65, I like your four image collage. Nicely done.

My apologies if the question came off as un-nice. I was trying to understand the reasoning since I didn't remember hearing that before.

To me, the devices can look flatter with a Grease Filled Die, but I've never considered that as wider.

I guess I'll have to chalk it up to my personal perception (in spite of Coops excellent comparisons).

Now that, I can agree with.

Then you might be a "wordsmither" of new varieties.

Thank you, may be my fault also as sometimes I over react! I enjoy answering questions as best as I can.

Just be prepared when your Girlfriend asks you if her certain body part looks "Flatter" or "Wider" - you're a deadman no matter what your answer is -
