I've been on the other side nearly 3,000 times here without asking a question yet...but this time I am perplexed as to whether this should be listed as an RPM. I found it in circulating coins yesterday and set it aside.

Whatever it is, I can tell you it protrudes from the field, is straight, has die wear, and has the 'character' I look for in a repunched mintmark. I can also tell you that it is not as long as a mintmark and has no sign of a curve, which would be a giveaway as a mintmark. So I'm on the fence here.

So look just to the northeast of the primary mintmark for this line, and let me know what you think of it. Mintmark or not?

Looks like an old die gouge to me. The die flow through it shows it been there a while. Is the die flow as strong on it as with the other die flow? If not that might tell how long it has been there. If it were a RPM it probably would have been found sometime ago, but I guess new varieties are turning up all the time. Probably find more examples of earlier die states would tell more of the mystery of this?

I'm definitely no pro,but I would have to say it's a die gouge.

The die wear on the mark is consistent with the die wear on the rest of the design.

New die varieties are still showing up from over 100 years ago. The statement that if it were an RPM it would have been found some time ago is assumption at best. If it were true, we might as well stop looking because everything has been found?

Interesting find Chuck. Looks to me like a die gouge as well but, it has that raised characteristic as you mentioned as well as the fact that it does resemble a partial mintmark slightly Great eye nonetheless.
