Hi,

First time poster - I am currently in Tokyo and purchased some coins including this Tempo Goryoban. My understanding is that these are quite rare due to the large size and high gold content compared to the typical 1 Ryo Kobans. They also only produced these during a short period of the Tempo era between 1837 and 1843.

It is also my understanding that there are different "mint masters" that produced these coins, as stamped in the lower leftside of the reverse. My particular one is a "Kawashichi" (literal translation "River 7").

Are there any Japanese coin experts on this board that can provide any more information about this coin, or perhaps point me towards some resources to learn more about it?

Thanks!

Abby

Yowza, that's beautiful. Can't offer anything about it in English other than what you'd find by just googling "Tempo Goryoban," I'm afraid. My guess is that either the seller or area coin shop (what city(ies) are you visiting?) might be able to help with a book or other resource, as long as you're willing to translate.
I remember a few years ago coming across the page of a young woman who was collecting and quite knowledgable about these types, If I can find it again I'll post it in this thread.

A lot of the Edo gold coins were exported overseas with Western traders bringing in silver and traded them with such gold coins. Many were melted down for bullion value and hence the survival rate of such coins are quite low.

Hartill has a section on gold in his Early Japanese Coins book.
Not sure how useful it may be to the OP.

That is a very good looking coin - I did a quick look on Numista, but nothing turned up yet.
