Coin arrived today. Very nice, I think. AU55 to my eyes. Only issue is the hit at K10 on reverse, but it's not bad in hand. Thoughts?

i think its a really nice example of a key coin. the ding doesn't bother me as it on the edge outside of the denticles. if there were more or it impinged those i'd be a little more concerned.

i think its a solid AU55 . low AU $$ would be pretty good for her if she graded straight. I guess the thing you have to consider is was this coin slabbed, came in details and then cracked out. I mean the coin is probably in the $175-200 range. why is it raw?

Panzaldi, you make good points, as always. I have no idea why this coin wasn't slabbed. Hard for me to believe it was a crackout. Other than that reverse rim ding, this seems to be a textbook AU55 - didn't think so at first, but in hand I definitely do. I won't reveal exactly what I paid, but I did pay full boat AU money. That said, I'm not disappointed. I think this coin would sell easily due to the solid appeal; it really is a beauty in hand. I will probably blow the money to get it slabbed, if for no other reason than my daughter will end up with this and has no idea about this hobby. That's the other reason nobody mentions for getting coins slabbed - they have collectible value and will go to somebody with limited knowledge, if any, of the hobby. Harder for an unscrupulous dealer to lowball a slabbed coin. My Two Cents, your mileage may vary.

no doubt

you make a good point about slabbing a coin if they are going to be passed down to a non-collector. this is the biggest dilemma long time collectors have as move into their senior years...what do you do with your collection? I have sold off quite a bit of my lower end coins but have a hard time parting with the nicer ones or full collections I actually pulled from circulation decades back as they took years to complete.

if you send this one in, please update us

UPDATE -

Just got this back from NGC. They liked it just a little better than most of us did. Awful picture from them. Pleased with the grade.

after your new photos I was going to say that the diamonds looked more solid for a 58 grade but the color and surfaces held me back. glad to see it pulled it.
