Interesting piece. Color me skeptical? Uncatalogued... super deep/full counterstamp (though no obvious modern concoction evidence on the other side)... I understand due to cultural hegemony, site looting, export restrictions, etc. concerns why they would be vague on the provenance, but I hope the serious involved bidders got more to go on than "recently discovered in a lot of silver coins of a similar age"!

Uncatalogued sure but how does something get this designation? Research. Would you pony up 45k dollars without seeing the research? Plus its CNG doing the action, trustworthy company.

I'm seeing a large tear/notch on the reverse side (lion side at K-4) But only a small one on the obverse (still at k-4) Is this coin a medal or coin turn coin?
I'm thinking that the orientation or rotation from one side to the other was random...

The description of the coin mentions they did a test cut and snick on the edge of the coin. Might be what you are referencing Dearborn?

The coin was hand struck in 1609, a time when the alignment of obverse/reverse design was not routinely performed with any accuracy. Even with the introduction of milled coinage and screw presses, the alignment could vary as each die wore out and was replaced. Precise and consistent alignment would not appear until hubbed dies and steam powered presses were introduced in the very late 18th century

Interesting coin.

New types and/or new varieties are turning up all the time. I don't know much about counterstamped types, so I don;t know what gets done to validate them, but I expect CNG has plenty of experience doing so.

On the other hand, even the big auction houses (including CNG) occasionally get fooled on coins from places that are not in their wheelhouse. But I assume they would stand behind their products.
