Hi Friends!
I was going through some wheat pennies and came across this beauty. The pics do not do it justice. But it's rainbow colored. Would this be worth submitting to have it certified? Any info would be appreciated. My son and I are new at collecting and have so much to learn.

Unfortunately, no. The full cost to have it graded would far exceed its value. With the posted pics, it appears the coin falls in the low to mid AU range. It would need to be in the MS66 or greater range to cover grading costs and perhaps offer greater value beyond. Keep it in a 2x2 as a fun find.

Agree, mid-AU. Most attractive but little premium over face value.

Thank you very much! I wasn't sure and didn't want to waste money for sure. But it's still beautiful! I'm hanging on to it. Have a great day!

I agree that it's not worth grading. Still a nice AU coin though.

nice find in circulation. i'd call it AU53 or 55. value maybe .10

a couple points to keep in mind

finding a coin in circulation that warrants grading is nil. there are some varieties on coins out there however you have to know exactly what you are looking for and spend hours upon hours looking at coins to find one. if you have a question or concern about a coin, just post it here. we will let you know.

most new folks have no idea the cost of grading a coin. hopefully this will help, your coin would have to grade MS67RD or better to warrant it.

there are really only 2 reasons to slab a coin

1. its a rare coin that needs authenticated and preserved
2. you are planning on selling the coin and the cost of acquisition plus the grading fee's would warrant it without chewing up all your profit

PCGS charges a minimum of $69 for a subscription other subscription levels include grading vouchers though so you could reduce these costs. add to the subscription cost, per coin grading cost which I think for this one might be $22, shipping & ins both ways (1-4 coins is $27 if the total value is under $1000)

NGC - economy grading tier is $23, plus $10 handling fee, plus $28 for shipping (1-5 coins).

ANACS grading would be $16 but there's a 5 coin minimum. Shipping would be $29-35.

i don't slab coins for these reasons especially the cost involved. I don't know why this is so popular today. just making the grading companies wealthy

Thank you for your advise. I just joined PCGS. But my son and I are very new to collecting. And I'm still trying to figure out if they are worth submitting. I also just purchased the Red Book to help us. It's a learning process and it almost seems like you need a degree to be a collector. So much to know and learn...hence the reason why I joined CCF. So thank you again for your help and advise.
