Just wondering how much a hole affects the price on old coins like this Indian Head cent.

yep! That is a hole alright..
Holed coins like this kill the value on them.

There are people who collect holed coins, but for most it ruins the value and collectability of the coin.

It's a goner. Looks like it might even be an 1864-L.

I'm with Coinfrog about the variety with the "L" on the ribbon. This "L" is sought after and will give it some value. It's in pretty good shape. I wouldn't be surprised if it sold In the $25-$40 range in ebay.

Learn something new here every day. Thanks for the info Coinfrog and Petespockets55. I just went to pcgs and searched for "What does the l on Indian cents mean". Nice one triggersmob! Looks like it could possibly be the "L" on ribbon.

Here's a better picture of the ribbon. Indeed it might have an L. Thanks for pointing that out, I had it my spreadsheet as no L.

I didn't see that was from you Trig A note on the L variety, the coin has a pointed bust verses a round bust on all other 1864 Indian cents. So if you see a pointed bust on a 1864, it is automatically the L on ribbon type (That detail can allow easy cherrypicks from dealers who don't realize they have a more valuable variety...)

Thanks Mrwhatisit. I guess I can't use this in 20Q now. Here's the reverse, if anyone would like to give me a grading opinion. I have it listed on my spreadsheet as VG10, but now I'm thinking F15 to VF20. The coin is a lot darker than it appears in my photos.

Quote:I guess I can't use this in 20Q now Sometime down the road I may well forget this As to an estimated grade, I can put this at F-12 details (holed) at best on the obverse since Liberty is not fully defined, and maybe a tad higher to a F-15 for the reverse...

I have an entire collection of holed FEC's and IHC's, 1857 FEC to 1909 S. Had fun doing it, took awhile.
