The Sacagawea dollars are kind of a huge surprise at this point in time. Really glad I started a set! The 2001S Sackie is currently listed in the $90 to $100 range so that would give you some idea how big a RIP-OFF the TV sales really are. All of the Sackie proofs are climbing in value so it is a set worth pursuing. Also, by law, the Sackie MUST be continued while the stupid Presidentail series is being struck. This alone tells me the whole program is about selling to collectors and NOT getting the new dollars into circulation. Personally I like the Sackie and really glad someone had the intelligence to keep the coin struck through this upcoming series. If they halted the Sackie now those complete sets would go through the roof!!! If you have proof Sacagawea's my advice would be to HOLD ON to them at this time!

SAC's have a great reverse...but the idea of a teenage native American looking back as she carries her kid on the obverse didn't impress me. I for one believe they should have come up with a new depiction and design of liberty. Gee...do you ever wonder why coins graced with Liberty designs are collected and prized more than designs without? Could it be that these designs are simply beautiful and fantastic eye appeal. Could it be that these coins have NO politcal overtones or messages? You have to admit, Liberty desigs have more eye appeal than the SAC or SBA obverses. I can remember my younger brother asking me when the SBA dollar coins hit the streets why the "wicked witch of the east" was on a quarter? The PC crowd mandated and pushed ahead their wishes for a woman (any woman) to grace an American circulated coin and look what they got...more so, they deserve what they got.

The Sacagawea has not been minted nor intended for circulation since 2001 actually.....all of the so called business strike coins that have been produced since that time are only available by ordering at a premium from the US Mint.....just as the the Kennedy halfs have been since that time. Total mintage figures are a fraction of their previous highs and I expect them to decline even further as the new dollar coin series progresses. Which answers your second question reguarding the coins.........YES they will still be produced alongside the dollar coins.......I somehow beleive the new dollars are also a collectible idea from the mint and are not intended to replace the Sackie nor do I believe they will be used for general purposes. The very same problems that plague the larger denomination coins of old have not diminshed or went away......and many banks do not like any new coins.......tellers do not like handling them for commerce.......people do not like carrying alot of change around...so if you plan to complete a set of the new dollars from circulation Good Luck!!......I think it may kick off with a big bang.....but then will soon be just like the Kenendy or the Sackie and only available in most places from orders to the mint at a premium cost....A complete set of uncirculated plus proofs generally sell for around 2 hundred dollars in a Dansco album.....just another note......the total mintage figures have been declining since 2001 on the sackies

CoinNut5 it is really great to see someone else can actually see thru all the smoke concerning these Presidential dollars. I don't understand those who complain about the weight of the coins as I usually carry around $3 in change to work everyday and 3 Sackies are a lot lighter than $3 in quarters? And those who complain about the Sackie being too similar to a quarter, well they had better quite handling ANY money at all if they think the two are alike! Personally I like the Sackie but wouldn't give a second breath for another President or political coin be it gold or silver. The whole program reeks with greed at the cost of the collector. Oh sure, it will start out great and there will be a huge production, probably at Wally World again, but after that we had better be prepared to pay a heck of an increase in mint and proof sets for something most of us do not want. The banks are not going to keep these on hand unless there is a kickback involved as they, for a great number of reasons, don't want the coins. The program is doomed before it even launches unless of course you are the U.S. Mint selling mint sets, proof sets, individual rolls and speciality sets! Who really is going to win here?

Hi Crystalk, Yes greed is driving much of the current markets....you cant really blame them though.......American collectors have been almost starved out for lack of design change since the mid sixties and were it not for some hearty souls that survived the clad coin glut of the 1970's...80's and 90's we may not even be here today.... Jim collecting specimens from mint sets is a sure fire way to get a nice coin and one that you know is not circulated........to show how crazy and fickle pricing can be at times...I just bought a 2002 proof Sacagawea that had been graded and encapsulated by a TPG for less than any coin I could find either raw or in a mint!!!...Go figure!

Presidential Series.
Will they circulate? Of course not.
Does the Government expect them to circulate? Of course not.
Will they be a cash cow for the Mint/Government? Of course.
Will they be better than nothing at all? In my opinion, certainly.

Me too. I like the design and was thinking of makeing a set just for the fun of it. To me its better than having a dead president to look at. But prices seems already high.

Sir Gary, The 2000 proof sets were exremely over produced so that is the only year where the Sackie is lacking a tad bit. It would be safe to say in the $15 to $20 range per coin at this time. Will check a little closer next week with my dealer and see what the old grey sheet has to say about it IF it doesn't slip my memory!
