My friend has a Jackie Robinson 1997-W $5 half eagle. It's graded at MS-70. When I saw it I had no Idea of its value. Coin Values has that coin at $7,000 in MS-69. I know this value does not nessicarily reflect market demands or price. Thought someone here might have a better Idea than me.

It was graded by PCGS. He inherited his fathers collection. This was one of the pieces.

PCGS lists on their site as $4150 in MS69 and $8500 in MS70. Nice piece to have- seems to be the key to the modern gold commems, as no other $5 gold modern commem goes above $2000 in MS70. Probably you could realistically expect to get about half the PCGS price or a little more, maybe $5000 because it is so scarce. These are just estimates/guesses and I hope someone with much more commem background can chime in.

I wish I was even aware of the U.S. Mints website back in 1997 ! If so, I would have one of these !
Obviously the "hero worship" for this baseball God transcended "coins" and "coin collectors" over to the general popularity of "baseball" and the interest in collectors of "that" sport" all combined together and went into this particular commemorative I'm sure !
And WOW !.....did it produce a coveted coin !
The '08 RedBook has this at $5,000.00 in MS-67 (not slabbed of course)....which isn't "current market price" AT ALL of course.....even know that they "went to print" early in 2007 for the 2008 edition.....you still don't go by RedBook prices.....but it's all I have here at the office. But that's why the first thing I would do while waiting for some expert advice on this coin is......look for it on ebay and a few other sources.....this can give ya a good general idea of todays value.

Funny with the difference between the price listed in this RedBook of mine between the $5.00 gold Jackie Robinson coin and my $5.00 gold Jamestown Anniversary coin.....it lists my proof 67 at $275.00........whereas yours is $5,000.00...
Yet BOTH are $5.00 Gold coins !
But, like I said, that's why I believe that it also depends greatly on "what is on the coin" and even "what the mintage might be", etc. etc. Mine is only exactly 10 years newer....so.....it's about "demand" and "interest" levels of course.
There's always current bullion prices of gold to go buy.......but the "collector value" is/can be HIGHLY important too !!
