Hello everyone,
I'm not a coin collector but the other day, a customer handed me some change for a payment. I noticed one of the pennies was very smooth on the front, and the back was normal. It's almost like a ghost image of lincoln. You can faintly make out "Liberty" I inspected the front very close, it does'nt look like it was altered by someone. I didnt clean the penny before I photographed it so, its got dirt on it.

I'm just super curious about it. what kind of error is it? is it even an error? is it worth anything? any info is appreciated.

Looks like a late stage (generic) capped die. The obverse die (Hammer) had a coin stuck to it and after striking many coins the devices flatten, leaving just an indication of the bust.

So what does the coin that got stuck on the upper die look like?

What happens when several planchets get stuck to the die? They bond together.

My coins are tagged with my name. Sometimes I forget, but the rest I add to my educational collection to share with the taker of the image. If you see I have used an image and not designated it, let me know. "I can fix that!"

Glowbot, You have a very nice "Brockage error" not nearly as nice as those depicted but still a great find. The "good" side has major die cracks. I'd estimate a retail price of around $50.00 for your change, very nice find! It pays to be a numismatist. ~ Jim
