Always be wary of photos taken at angles.

Concerned about the lines on the reverse between the eagle's neck and the right wing and also the marks in the field left of the eagle's right wing by TED. I looked at quite a few different examples of 1840-O w/Drapery (this is one of only two dies, the other is the "Large O" reverse) and was unable to locate any examples with a similar line in that location.

Another interesting observation is the line that starts just below Liberty's left thumb (at the cap pole) and arcs across the bust through her breastbone all the way over to star #4.

With only 43,000 minted, if these were die markers or evidence of clashed dies, I'd expect to see them on other coins.

I'll give it a cautious VF30 grade, but I wonder what it is that the seller doesn't want you to see?

Thanks all.

Paralyse, I noticed your points as well and likewise went looking for other examples with similar markings and came up with nothing.

It has 30 day return privilege, so I may take a stab at it, we'll see.

I think you should go for it, it is very attractive for the grade level and type. Like @paralyse noticed, there appears to be small but fresher contact marks. Nothing significant in my eyes.

The interesting thing to me is the mark between the wing and neck of the eagle - it's a relatively protected (low relief) area of the coin, so seems strange that a mark would end up there.

If you buy this coin, please share photos of those areas because I'm curious as to what, precisely, that mark is, and what may have caused it.

it is strange a mark that deep would not have crossed and of the devices around it. leads me to believe it could have been die related

would like to see better straight on shots if you pull the trigger to see those surfaces

Well, it sold for $455. Winning bidder has 22k in feedback, so probably a dealer.

I did pull some additional pics and just wasn't feeling it and definitely not at that price.

As Frog said, possibly an old cleaning or something with the haloing on both sides. who knows.

The mark between the neck and the wing looks like a rather fresh gouge to me. And to the right of the wing, there looks to be some strong chatter all along the right wing.
