Hello,

I am interested in starting a date set in the era of either Morgan or Peace dollars. I have very few common dates in my small collection.'

1881 Morgan and 3 cent
1991 Morgan and 10 cent
1928 Nickel and Quarter
1935 Dime and Nickel

My dollar dates are
1879, 81, 83,84, 85, 88, 89,90,91, 92, 96, 97, 21, 22, 23, 24

I started looking at 81 but there are low circulations of Nickels and halfs and the prices look way out of my reach.

Are there any dates where all denominations of coins were pumping out of the mints or is there always going to be a coin or two that make this goal expensive.

I am not looking to acquire gold coins for my date set.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

If you are trying to put a "budget" date set together start with lower graded coins and them upgrade them at a later time if you can afford to do so.

I think I get it, you want to pick a year and get all the different coins from that particular year. I would suggest getting a RedBook and it should be pretty easy to check for a year that has the best availability.

Perhaps our OP is wanting to assemble a year set of dollars? That's quite doable and far less expensive in the long run. I long ago completed a year set of Morgans, assembled in a DANSCO album.

I am sorry for the Rambling. Getting a copy of the Red Book is a good start and I will decide from there how to best expand my collection.

Thanks

If your are trying to do a date set by denomination during the years Morgans or Peace dollars were minted and the 1881 nickel is a stopper on your budget, then the Morgan era is not doable. On Peace dollars you are going to find the 1921 as a challenging year for your budget as the 1921 dollar, half and quarter are going to push your budget. On the 1928 Peace dollar you may need to do the 1928 S to stay within your budget.

Thanks for the input. I have decided to try and go the Morgan route, at least for now. I have made 3 ebay purchases and am holding my breath that the coins don't come back a total disappointment. I am ok with some Fine or maybe even some Good coins in my collection. Might be selling some property in the near future which will open up some funds, but I have no timetable for completion. Here is my first coin I got in

I was looking for coins that are visually appealing, don't have scrub marks and don't looked dipped to the point they look like King Baldwins mask.

How did I do?

The 1880 quarter and half dollar are pricy.

Update.

Decided to collect a Morgan dollar from every year regardless of mint.

Started out with 13 dates.

Still looking out for 1903, 1893 and 1895.

I have my eye on a 1903 but will likely splurge for a lowball or AG in the other two dates at Christmas or my birthday.
