Found this corroded 19?8 Lincoln Cent and was about to put in discard pile when I saw all the straight lines, both vertical and horizontal that looked very much like part of a building through the crud. What is it?

Might be a glue job. Have you tried soaking this in acetone?

Yes, I'm thinking some dried gunk--possibly an adhesive. Give acetone a shot.

Have some 100% acetone, actually nail polish remover. Will give it a try. How long should I let it sit in the acetone.

Looks like crud on the coin. Don't use nail polish remover. Only use 100% pure acetone.

It depends on how thick the substance is. You may need to soak overnight, rinse, repeat. Be sure to use fresh acetone each cycle.

It was glue. Acetone revealed it all.
