Hello all! And apologies for all of the posts bunched together--I tend to do things in batches. If not preferred in the forum, let me know and I'll adjust in the future.

With this penny, is this an example of rainbow toning on a penny? If not, what might have caused this toning?

Toning it is. It's the result of copper surfaces being exposed to environmental agents. Copper is a reactive metal and environmental exposure can result in a range of toning effects.

I agree. Yours looks more like artificially or chemically created toning. Hard to say exactly how it happened.

it looks artificially toned either by heat or chemicals.
And your posting of your coins is very correct - one per topic. so good job on that.

Remember the word toning is just a marketable word for tarnish or a chemical degradation of the metal of the coin.

Outside the coin hobby, Brasso and silver polish is sold to get rid of "toning" which is seen as deterioration and objectionable.

Found it in your cars cup holder?
Also if you hold a "Zincoln" over heat it portrays many different colors.

@marve, nope, found it in a roll of pennies. Each new roll is a new treasure hunt, I'm finding. Becoming a bit of an obsession.
