I picked up NGC 3294260-005 on ebay because I was curious about the apparent rotation on the reverse. The coin is a Type 1 cupronickel 1942 Jefferson nickel. In hand, the reverse does definitely look slightly askew, but that now begs the question: what is the precise orientation of a Jefferson nickel obverse? Level is much easier to determine on coins with horizontal text.

I am going to do some Internet research on the question, but Google isn't always a great tool for this kind of query.

great question Brand!! I have always had issues placing the nickels in my albums correctly. I put one in looking at what I think is the correct position, then look and see that the reverse side is tilted terribly..
Maybe a look at the mints examples will help determine the 'tilt' of the obverse.

Using Jefferson's portrait as a rough guide, it does looks like there is some rotation on your example! Also, agree with @dearborn that it's a beast to get these pre-2004 nickels lined up just right.

Internet searching was not terribly helpful on this subject. I am thinking that the best way might be to take a normal nickel, put it into a flip, and then have a rubber band cross both sides. Monticello is easy to line up, at least.

Good question, and apparently the TPG's have a hard time with this as well. Just scanning over a couple dozen slabbed examples on Heritage, at least 90% have the reverse rotated significantly, usually counterclockwise. I've tended to line up the top end letters in TRUST and LIBERTY, but I don't know if that's correct.

Not sure this helps, but seems pretty close. Thanks, Doug.

Adding: the above image is not from the link below.I'm thinking it was downloaded from the mint years ago, but I could be wrong.

That composite photo looks about right, but it's hard to say when you combine two separate photos without any identifying landmarks. The best way might be what @Brandmeister suggested—put several nickels in flips with Montecello exactly horizontal, and see what the obverse looks like.
