This nonsense has popped up several times here on the CCF, and as Bobby points out, no one has ever explained the cause of this "major error". This thread has an overlay by Coop showing that it isn't a clash: http://goccf.com/t/440280And another: http://goccf.com/t/460072

Would this fall into the same category as "oreo" quarter that was posted here a few days ago?

I have one I got in change but haven't looked at it since I got a scope. I'll dig it out and post pics if you want. But as I recall, it didn't seem to be a raised or sunken feature but looked more like a finishing process.
Best way I can describe it is like a buff mark left when waxing a car.

I know, because there are no slabbed ghost comets. That is what I was trying to show. Someone on Facebook told me that PCGS certifies them with "ghost comet" on the label. Said they came up with the name which I'm sure is crap. I asked the guy what the actual error was and he kept ignoring the question and said PCGS certifies them.

i stumbled across this thread while looking for something else. I read all the replies. then I googled this 'sally ride ghost comet'-thing and read the first three things that popped up: the first hit was an ebay link, but I was more interested in just looking at the picture of the quarter (as the 'error' was circled in blue) rather than paying attention to the auction. this 'error' is unimpressive and is probably not an error. the next hit was another ebay link, so I went to it and I see that 1 other person has this coin in a shopping cart. then, I notice the price: $1,200. ( riiiight...) after a hearty laugh, I go to the next hit, a question on reddit: "are the sally ride ghost comet quarters worth keeping" one reply was: "IMO no. they're just late(r) die stage flow lines." 'ghost comet'...

It looks like the remnants of die polishing to me. Nothing major.
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!

Quote: On these Error Quarters, Washington from the obverse side of the coin was punched partially through to the reverse! This caused an outline of Washington on the reverse side of this coin. The outline is called the "Ghost Comet" The easiest place to see this outline is a "V" pattern to the left of Dr. Sally Ride in the coin's field. Sounds like a die clash to me

The term presumably originates from self-professed youtuber &/or tictok "coin experts", that have delved into numismatics for a week or two, supplying erroneous info to their equally uneducated followers. Its like the blind, leading the blind, just as we've seen w/ the.... L on the rim lincoln cents.

it's probably time to call ghostbusters.
take your pick:
Spencer, Tracy & Kong
or
Venkman, Stantz & Spengler.
