I noticed the D on this 1989 penny looked a little thick, so I took a closer look. What I noticed were three distinct curved lines at the bottom of the MM which makes me wonder if this could possibly be a re-punched mintmark, or just Mechanical Doubling.

Might be split-plate doubling.

You will see that on a lot of Denver mint marks - it is split plating.

Split plating, yes. Has begun to expose the zinc core.

Thanks to all. John1 mentioned my checking all 3 reference sites. I'm not sure what he is referring to. Can someone let me know what those sites are?

I did as both John1 and igwt79 suggested, and checked Variety Vista to determine if they might have a photo of a 1989 D RPM similar to my coin. What I found was a really close match to the 1989D RPM 009 variety coin as identified in The Lincoln CentRPM Book Vol. 2: 1959-1989. Please let me know if you agree.

I'd like to clarify that the new image I posted is of my own coin, and not the coin identified in Variety Vistas The Lincoln CentRPM Book Vol. 2: 1959-1989. Under CCF rules, I am not allowed to post an external sites image of the 1989D RPM 009 variety coin. So I hope you don't mind looking up the RPM for comparison. http://www.varietyvista.com/index.htm

Well you can post images from VV, we do it all the time, just be sure to give credit to the site. You can also post up the link right to the coin you are referring to.

Now looking at VV RPM-009 that looks like split plating too to me not an RPM.

I just checked all 27 on Wexler and I do not think your coin is an RPM. John1

I know I'm beating a dead horse, and do agree with the above responses. But for those who may not have seen the Vista Variety coin, I am attaching it to this post. I think you'll agree it is easy to think you've found the RPM009, when it is actually something else of little value.

The MM position doesn't match. Yours is farther away from. the 9
