Hello,

I noticed that well circulated Morgan's often sell at or above book value on ebay and I can find XF-AU coins below value. I'm assuming that this is preference and there is value to a well traveled coin over a coin not nice enough to be considered MS.

Is it as simple as demand determines the market?

What grades do you prefer and why? (realistically)

I just started collecting morgans and luckily we have a local on line auction house that auctions a lot of coins, so I bid on the MS graded ones for my ms collection in an album, I also am collecting lesser grades for my whitman folder I find at gun shows. sometimes the lesser grades go into my album until a Ms replacement shows up. with so many minted, lots of nice ones can be found.

Well circulated common date Morgan's prices are determined by the melt value of silver and a small premium. The condition of the coin plays a smaller part on pricing on examples that are melt value if the weight is not an issue.

Morgan's in XF-AU condition have more variance in price. The condition of the example plays a large roll in the pricing. If the example been cleaned, damaged, scratched or low eye appeal, the price most likely is going to go below book value. If the example is solid for the grade and strong eye appeal, the price most likely will be above the book value.

I agree - a difficult question to answer, however, I always aim for mid to low MS coins first - and if out of my price range, I work down to AU.

AU to BU and (in my opinion) the most historic coin (particularly the 1880s) for the most reasonable pricing generally you'll find.

I think it would depend on the greediness (or generosity) of the seller. BTW, use caution on purchasing MS coins, as many of them are cleaned but sold as MS.
