Hi, saw this for sale. Hope images are adequate. Do you think this 1917-D has an S mintmark northeast of the D? No OMM or D with a misplaced S mintmark described in online references or CPG.

I see no evidence of this phantom MM.

I don't think it's an "extra" mintmark, despite the shape. Could it be a struck through something?

It's certainly unusual, and you have a good eye to spot that. I'm not a quarter guy, but I've spent a lot of time staring at S mint marks. That doesn't seem to be quite the same shape as the 1917-S mint mark style. But mispunched and possibly filed or sanded, that I cannot say. Doesn't seem like it could be a clash, either.

Very interesting. The right amount of wear, toning, and Pareidolia.

Not even shaped like a proper S mintmark, so has to be a circulation fluke.

No wonder you're a moderator jbuck. So insightful! Coinfrog, thank you for your help. I agree, it looks different than the squat thick S mintmarks on most 1917-S type 2s Interestingly, there's more than 1 type of S mintmark style on type 2 1917-S quarters. Most are squat and thick, but one is more elongate and thin, and if stamped on an uneven surface across edges, like this surface, then corrected to try to fix the mistake, might also explain this. I am no expert, so I really have no idea if this is even a possibility. Although I agree with the others that think it's interesting.

Regardless of the how or why, the coin is a keeper. It may not give you monetary gain, but its value for conversation is being established in this topic.

Variety Vista lists no second S punch. I went through the PCGS images for that year, and found no thin, elongated S. Are you sure that the second "squat" S isn't just the first one with considerable circulation flattening? Or punch flattening from use? Or hammered at an angle? It's not out of the question that other punches were in the mix. There are many years of Mercury dimes with a mix of mint mark styles (some considered CPG varieties). Is there another denomination S punch that could have been used by accident? I agree with Jbuck, it's an interesting coin and a great conversation piece.

Unfortunately, the seller did an inadvertent bait and switch on me. He had images of the wrong coin posted on ebay. One he sold some time ago. He said he accidentally used those old images on an ad for a different coin. He was nice enough about fessing up and offered me a full refund. I am less than pleased. Thanks for the helpful input. If you want to sell an interesting unattributed RPM/OMM SLQ, hit me up.

What a terrible thing to do. I hate it when sellers use 'Stock' images. I shop by what I want first then by Sight! I want the coin I see not some random coin grabbed out of a box.
