I originally acquired this 1879-S Morgan dollar in a MS-64 NGC holder. But one day I got a little over ambitious and cracked it out of the holder and as I was pulling the two layers apart the coin slipped out on to the ground which is why there is a light but noticeable scrape right under the P and Pluribus.
I would now call it an MS-63 or low 64.

Why did we pull it out of the holder?

I'll say MS-63.

Unfortunate about the scrape, as it is the lightest part of the coin now. Might still make a 64, cheek is pretty clean.

I think it will still be an MS-64.

It looks like removing the coin from the holder was a good idea. It was starting to tone badly.

Fresh scratches are one of the risks when cracking out a coin. A nice original looking example.
