The Mint stamp has a defined "X" where it would be. Were there any made like this? *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***

Some sort of counter stamp not a mint error. I moved your thread to the error and variety section. John1

That is very strange but it's gotta be some kind of PMD. I am trying to think how a P or D could be deformed into an X shape maybe a screwdriver strike on each side of the D?

to the CCF No there were none made like this. Has to be PMD. What does the reverse look like? MM might have been Xd out with a metal stamp.

If you mean the stamp just under the lower left of the state background, it shows AM not MM, the same as my other coins of this type. Thank you for the update.

@4Eight - "MM" was used as an abbreviation for "Mint Mark". The statement means that the original Mint Mark (MM) may have been purposely hit with a hard metal object that would make the "X" shape that appears where the Mint Mark would be located... something like a Philips Head screwdriver, which would leave a mark like an "X" (Xd out) where there should be a "P" or "D" or "S" Mint Mark:

Looks like someone hammered a Phillips screw driver on the mm.

Quote: Looks like someone hammered a Phillips screw driver on the mm. Ah.... I think you're right. The shadows do indicate that that mark is incuse/stamped. Good eye.
