circulation flattening changing the shape combined with a worn out die would be my guess. Have you tried to find out if there were any inverted MMs reported for this year?

I don't see any listings for 1974 but it looks exactly like the listings from 1946 as far as being inverted. Compared to all my other 74's that are just as damaged, it doesn't seem that's the case.

Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I edited my comment I see how that didn't make sense.

The only thing inverted here is your last pic. Sorry, just damage.

Still damage. May have also been partially polished.

I can understand why you might think this is inverted.

Brand, that is the MMS-004/009 mm style but nothing to do with the topic at hand, just a mashed up mm, possibly abraded, that the OP sees an inverted mm that is not. Glad you are paying attention though. You are one of the few who have picked up on the multiple times I have put that link out there. It's a good read, by one of my friends and yes, Ray did the pics for him. It delisted multiple RPMs too, of various different denominations.

-makecents-, even in its crushed state, the mint mark on the OP coin is almost certainly not a MMS-008 Tall S mint mark. I assumed (possibly incorrectly) that coinhusker was comparing his mint mark to a Tall-S, without realizing there were two S mint marks used in 1974.
I think we agree that the OP mint mark is actually just a mauled MMS-004/009 in the proper orientation.
