Having just settled the 1981-S pair of mint marks for my proof nickel folder, I moved on to the 1979-S nickels. I thought that I had settled these two coins, but when I checked them again, now I am not so sure.

One is clearly a Type 2 mint mark. Not sure about the other nickel. It was sold as Type 1 on ebay, but I don't think it looks like MMS-009/004? The mint mark seems to have two ridges and a really groovy shape.

Definitely 1979-S Type 2:

Not really sure:

I am going to say they are both Type 2. The Type 1 is more blob than S, with serifs that melt into the body of the S.

Definitely a type 2 but looks like the punch is messed up already or isolated MD. Maybe it wore out quickly and that's why there were two types in 81?

To me, the second one almost looks machine doubled. But the 79 looks untouched, so maybe that's unlikely. Does Machine Doubling even happen on proof coins?

Edit: -makecents- beat me to the punch. Har, har.

Here is a link to isolated MD, but I don't know enough about proofs to answer your other question. I don't see why it could not also happen with proofs though.

That's an interesting ErrorRef.com article. So basically if the mint mark has been punched deeply into the die, when the coin is struck, the mint mark will protrude a little higher than other devices. That can allow MD and chattering die to affect only the mint mark without disturbing anything around it.

Visually, those article images seem similar to what we are seeing here.

I can't tell from the angle of you pic. Is it all around the mm or just the right side? If it's on both sides, it might be as I said, possibly a worn punch already.

I'm mixed on this MM. The top of the mm spine is flattened out, but the bottom half of the spine appears to be a narrow pointy spine
A better in focus image may help
