Quote: Was Guelders/Nijmegen still under indirect control of Burgundy when this coin was issued? I will start by saying that minting authority in the Low Countries at this time is really confusing because in the same geographic area and time period you can have a ducal, comital or episcopal mint, but also civic issues and revolutionary issues. My understanding of the political situation in Guelders/Gelderland is that in 1473 the Duchy came under control of the Dukes of Burgundy. Charles the Bold (1474-1477) and his daughter Marie (1477-1482) used NIjmegen as the ducal mint, and struck coins there in their names. When Maximilian took over after Marie's death in 1482, unrest began in the Low Countries, leading to open revolt by the Flemish cities in the late 1480s, and the relocation of of all the mints in the affected areas. So, by the time of Spence's Nijmegen coins of the last few days, the Guelders mint had moved to Zaltbommel. ... which means these are city issues, not ducal issues. Nijmegen had been granted city rights (by the Holy Roman Emperor) back in the 13th century, and later became a member of the Hanseatinc league. Most of those cities could mint their own coins (other Netherlands cities with those rights included Deventer, Kampen, Zwolle, Groningen I think ... many of them places that feature prominently in Levinson). Why the choice was made to use the orb, I can't say. But everything I've read about Nijmegen says it was one of the more "east-facing" (i.e. allied to Germany) parts of the Low Countries in medieval times.

This dated Turnose from Cologne is in above-average condition (excepting the edge cut):

Looks like a deliberate callback to the gros tournois design of the 13th-14th centuries. I wonder what the coat of arms on top of the second pic is; it looks a bit like a fox but I can't quite tell for sure.

Spence those are really cool coins! I like how the date is written prominently in the inner legend where it won't get clipped.

@spence, really like that Julich-Berg type, and that turnosegroschen is flat out gorgeous And the string of AH dated types from ttkoo and bd251 equally impressive. I'm back to dated Low Countries types with a 1481 briquet/stuiver of Brabant:

1480 double briquet (2 stuivers) of the Duchy of Brabant: Interesting feature of the last two coins is that they are the same size and weight, but the 2 stuiver coin (1480) has double the silver content of the 1 stuiver coin (1481).
