*** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***So I cracked this thinking it should get a ms63 because it's a big jump: I figured it's safe since PCGS already have it a grade, I was gonna send it back in but now it looks like there are cleaning hairlines under. Will it come back cleaned? I used gloves and didn't touch the face. 3 seconds in ezest rinse and dry. I'm so upset.

Lesson learned, I hope. It did look better before the ezest. I can't answer your question, but some of the pros will. John1

to The Community! The hairlines were there before you cracked it out. 99.9% sure that PCGS saw them when they originally graded the coin and that's why they assigned the 62 grade. The major TPG's don't miss much at all. Next go around it'll probably get an "Unc Details - Cleaned / Hairlines" printed on the label. This experience is part of your "tuition" at "The School of Numismatic Blunders" of which we never graduate. I've been in this school for well over 60 years, made some doozies and still haven't graduated. (I've rarely pulled the same stunt twice though!) Best just to say "oops!", don't do it again and move on from it. Sorry this happened to you.

I'm not the expert on these, but I think MS62 was the correct grade. Not sure what PCGS would grade it now.

she probably will grade UNC details now. I don't know much about ezest but the only thing I would ever use on silver is 100% acetone. I agree PCGS probably netted the coin rather than details it.
next go around prior to resub consideration post here first for comments but based on you photo in the case I'm not sure folks would have said to leave it and may have opted for a crack out as well but that photo is a little small to tell and a couple slightly angled photos may have shown the hairlines

Since the slab was Gold Shield, there is a TrueView image. Some blemishes are visible there, but can't see the major lines to the left of the portrait. We'd need a better pre-soak pic for a real comparison but it does look like the dip brought out the highlights (or lowlights, as the case may be). I might have left it as-is and sent it in for reconsideration. Requesting conservation feels like it would have been overkill -- it didn't look /that/ bad. Or maybe go for a CAC bean instead. https://www.pcgs.com/cert/49427377

I'd grade this one an AU-58.

Nice looking coin before the dip. Ezest is acid that will remove a thin layer of metal and toning. Those hairlines are from a previous cleaning that was covered up with toning. The coin most likely now grades UNC Details cleaned. You may consider putting it into an album to retone and hide the hairlines. Sometimes after a dip the coin will tone ugly and show spots. At his point sending it to PCGS for regrading is a waste of more money.

Sorry for the bad luck. You're a brave guy dipping a $1000 coin. I guess it was worth a gamble?

it's really easy to flush money down the toilet trying to fix things that really don't need to be fixed.
Yours was a perfect example.

You should've left it alone.
Toning without a doubt can and does hide flaws, hopefully your lesson was learned.
