Would this be caused by a combination of polishing with Die Deterioration? First time I've seen this.

Just extreme deterioration. The more you search, the more you will run across these.

I've searched over 20000 circulation nickels so far. In the 1980s, the Mint ran the dies into the ground. I have encountered many examples of the poofy coat lettering.

Normally the Die Deterioration ripples from the rim to the bust. I do find it curious that your fields are relatively smooth. Possibly the die was polished in an attempt to counteract the extreme deterioration, or perhaps to remove a clash or other problem. It could also be circulation wear, or just the occasionally strange way that the mint equipment ages with striking.

Neat example of extreme DDD. Good eye to catch it! =)

BrandMeister, your recent finds forced me to get a box of nickels. So far 1 roll and a few oddities plus a nice die chip on the memorial and a spike head.

Be sure to check for those modern doubled dies on 2006-2021. I made a post showing my detection setup on the CRH forum. Good luck! =)
