I purchased a 1936 proof set of of ebay last week.
I was super excited when it finally showed up, pulled it out of the box, put it under my scope and the disappointment hit. All of the coins except for the Buffalo nickel were cleaned or polished. Micro scratches on the obverse and reverses. Some also had deep scrapes in them from a metal tool. The quarter's reverse looked like it was place on the pavement and stepped on. A lot of metal movement on that one.
I contemplated keeping them, but my objective was to send them in to get slabbed right away. They would have most likely got details unfortunately.
The Buffalo nickel was beautiful with very nice toning to it, but couldn't justify keeping the whole set for the one coin. Oh well.
Now I will most likely have to spend more to get a nicer set I can live with.
Sorry guys I didn't get pictures, but it's on ebay as the last one sold if interested.
That one's going to hurt having to send it back, for awhile I think.

Well, I do have some pictures of some of the scratches and damage to the coins as required by ebay for returns, but you won't like them.
They are pictures of my scope monitor.
I will post them only if requested though, as it is against the rules.

kurdlezuit, you did the right thing in returning that set. For that kind of money, you should have expected and received near-perfection.

I don't think there's one good image in that listing. You're buying a crapshoot for $5k. Ask for better images at that price level.

Wow - that is a lot of money to pay for any coin with that poor of images.

You did right by sending it back. Next time ask for better photos.

I was thinking that it would have cost a lot for a '36 proof set even before looking at the link. $5100.00 for that set is quite a lot for a hand assembled 'proof' set.
I can see some of the cleaning scratches on the half..

Good choice sending that back.. But the seller will just find someone else to dump it on..

Next time I will be asking for better pictures. I did see the scratches in the terrible pictures provided, but I thought they were most likely on the case. It's a proof set. I never would have imagined someone would have treated those coins as poorly as some of those.
I learned my lesson and am very thankful the seller accepted returns.
Thanks guys.

Scratches on the case would likely have appeared more white than gray, and the damage on the quarter reverse (across "states") would have sealed the deal. As for proof quality, as soon as anything leaves OGP (sometimes even before), all bets are off.

Good that you can return it. Hope the seller also refunds your shipping costs.

Good point Dearborn.
I guess I'm just afraid of bringing it to everyone's attention and possibly creating competition.
But, I could be a over thinking it a bit.

Kurdlezuit,

May I ask, Why Did You Collect that Year?

Do You Collect Proof Sets, Just thought I would ask..

I collect Proof Sets, I Personally would Not collect " Second hand, Non Original Government Packaging " Sets, That's Just Me, All Original....
