. When checking this ( 71D ) cent.
After flipping it over to reverse my short term memory was in play .
At that time I'm thinking I have another one of those 73D Recurring Die Subsidence Error, but it looks a little different from the other 8 different ones I have.
It actually took a few minutes+ for my long term memory to kick in and think wait a minute.

The coin is affected in the same area as 73D. Bay 1 is affected slightly 2 and 3 more so.
Something has happened to the front of memorial building above columns 2,3,4.
Also it looks like ( trails?) in that mess in front of the cornice?
Sorry for a few extra pictures. The last full reverse show clashes below the steps. The one on the left runs down through N almost to E of ONE.

Thank you all for your help.

Hi, Looks like it may have happened in 1971 D also.

The results a poorly done die polishing to remove a die clash. Notice all the scratches from the polishing in and around the defect but not anywhere else on the coin.

Thanks John,Frank and HGK3 for looking and commenting.

I checked on Recurring Die Subsidence Errors on ERROR-REF.COM.
If you check it out. This looks like it could have the same problem.
I just haven't seen or heard of it on any other cent besides 1973D.

Agree, just a die-polishing issue, no big deal.

Nice job on the pics, Rob! I'm not sure but would lean towards an over polished die due to a clash. In your second full coin shot of the reverse, I feel like I can see clash remnants of Abe's head in the lower fields and typical clash remnants just above the upper east part of the memorial. I put your example in a collage with dies 1, 2 and 3 from Error Refs "recurring die subsidence error" examples. This would be a good one for Mike to chime in on. None the less, nice job on this, Rob.

There is evidence of clashing. It shows up pretty well below the left pedestal down between NE of ONE. Very light below the right one. Upper right above the roof very very minor
( maybe).
There's no other clash showing like typical in bays 2,3,4,7,8,9.
The damage doesn't look like it's a clash problem.
The clashes that is showing had me thinking the same thing.
With overlay it doesn't seem to fit ( but ) maybe it does
Also somehow/sometime just above columns 2,3,4 it looks like there's damage.

The lead-off specimen doesn't resemble any of the many recurring die subsidence errors known among 1973-D cent dies. I'm not sure how to categorize it.
