I'm thinking staining/toning caused by exposure to environmental agents. What does the reverse look like?

a portion of the coin (possibly the bright shiny spots) were covered by something while the rest was exposed to the environment.

Fun patterns to the surface staining like this can develop when coins are put in fountains. Maybe this one was lying face-side down partially over a drainage mesh.

Also, welcome to CCF. We are glad to have you here.
