I have a few Peace dollars that have been handed down through the family but were never taken care of. They are of similar condition to the one posted.

They are very dark compared to others I have and it doesn't seem to be toning so I suspect environmental damage. I was contemplating an acetone bath - I doubt it could do more harm but not sure it would do any good either.

Are they just body bag candidates?

You could try dipping it, couldn't hurt at this point.

I'd go with a loooooooong acetone soak and then evaluate. You may accept the result, or decide to proceed with a more virulent approach--all depends on your long term goals for such pieces.

Thanks.
I'll try the soak first. I'm organizing my collection (95% circulated but most considerable better than this) which will go to the grandkids eventually.
If these don't improve I could hand them out at Christmas and maybe spark some interest in collecting.

I'm not seeing ED, just hairlines from a wipe. I would soak in VC for a few hours, then put in an airtite. Will eventually tone more evenly with a nice patina.

A pure acetone soak and Verdi-Care might help.

Not beyond help from what I can see.

As mentioned, Acetone for a day. Inspect, maybe another go for a day or two. Then a round of VC. Reassess afterwards - there are other options.
I swing a metal detector and have a knack for finding dirty old coins.

acetone may remove some gung but under it looks like some pretty good wipe lines especially reverse.

Thanks everyone. As soon as it's cool enough to go on the porch i'll try the acetone. Don't think it can hurt.

Worth a try, you cannot make it worse.
