Here's a reminder that it pays to know and check your varieties! I recently snagged the capped bust dime below because it was incorrectly labeled by PCGS as an 1814 10C Large Date.

While this coin strictly speaking is a Large Date, it is more specifically JR-5 which is the famous STATESOF variety (where the reverse legend STATESOFAMERICA appears as one long word due to the engraver's misjudgment of spacing), and most TPGs including PCGS list it as a separate major entry.

Check-Your-Varieties!-1814-10c-Jr-5-Statesof

In this grade, the STATESOF lettering is not extremely prominent, but JR-5 is uniquely identified by the placement of 10C on the reverse, which can allow you to pick up this variety even on well-worn corns in the FR-02 or PO-01 vicinity where the legend may not even be visible at all.

While the 1814 JR-5 is not a rare variety by any means (I estimate a survival of roughly 200-250 examples, giving it a rarity rating of R3+ (despite the fact that many references still list it as R4)), it is nonetheless very popular, worth roughly twice the other Large Date varieties in the respective grades.

It is also worth mentioning that the same reverse die was used once again in 1820, creating the 1820 JR-1 STATESOF variety which is just as popular. (The 1820 JR-1 is a bit scarcer; I estimate a survival of roughly 150-200 examples corresponding to a rarity rating of R4-.)

Very nice snag and a very cool variety! Those letters are tight. Must have been a Friday at the mint.

That is a very nice find and good description of the variety.

Regarding the relative scarcity of 1814 JR-5 compared with 1820 JR-1:
It is interesting to note that the authors of the "Bust Dime Variety ID Guide" assign rarity ratings of R-4 and R-3 respectively.

The "Mega Red Book" 4th edition, which includes an in-depth section on US dimes, estimates a surviving population of 100 - 200 for 1814 JR-5, and 300 - 450 (!) for 1820 JR-1.

Both publications (both fairly recent publications) thus estimate the 1814 "StatesOf " variety is scarcer than the 1820 "StatesOf".

(My own (limited) experience would tend to confirm that, but I have not done a detailed comparison of which is scarcer).

I have two examples of 1814 JR-5 in my Dime collection.

Thanks @GERMANICVS for that useful information! It's always interesting to me how rarity ratings evolve over time. I'm quite shocked that the Mega Red Book estimates 300-450 surviving 1820 JR-1s!

Those references obviously have access to far more data than I do, so I'll amend my survival estimates. I base my estimates on the attributed populations by the major TPGs taken together with my personal data from analyzing available raw coins over the last 5 years or so. I think a major source of potential error for my method is not being able to take into account the fact that more popular varieties often show up more frequently than their rarity rating suggests simply because they are popular and more valuable. I can see how that would skew my estimates for 1814 JR-5 and 1820 JR-1.
