This is a deep chocolate brown. While anything chocolate is right by me, please don't let the flavor sway your opinion. Thanks in advance. Image: 1914D.jpg34.31 KB Edited by fmtaxguy 05/03/2009 8:10 pm

Picture is a little small but from what I can make out, I would grade this coin EF-40. That's only because I can't make out any lines on the wheat stalks. Nice color.

Yes, sorry about the pics. They are the seller's pics. The seller tells me that, while wear shows on the wheat stalk lines, the lines are visible nevertheless. Thanks for the opinions to date.

I would be a bit suspicious about the dark color and the surfaces look faintly granular to me. This cent does appear to be EF or better based on wear and if undamaged should be worth well over $500. I know not everyone likes TPG grading but the '14-D is commonly counterfeited and I for one would be much more likely to buy a slabbed example. Why hasn't this coin been graded by PCGS or NGC, unless it has environmental damage or other defect that would prevent it from being slabbed?

I can't tell for sure but corrosion would be a concern of mine. The details look EF/AU. I would get an expert opinion "in hand" after it arrives.
Good Luck!

Pitting on the back. Could have been found in the ground and cleaned way back when. I would be leary of the coin. It's one of those high dollar coins that I personally would only purchase in a slab. Doesn't mean I wouldn't crack it out to put it in my album but I would protect my investment. I wouldn't grade it any higher than EF-40. Something just doesn't seem right about the coin, I can't put my finger on it but it just seems wrong.

Thanks all. I shared some of the mentioned concerns, and have decided to let this one pass. I appreciate all the learned feedback, as always.

Yea, only buy a slabbed example or from a trusted dealer after seeing in hand. NEVER buy the key date Lincolns blindly from ebay....you're just asking to get burned.
