The US Mint has released a variety of Coin and Currency Sets over the years, some have been part of modern US commemorative coin programs, others have been related to a general historical theme.

Here's an Index (i.e., linked list) to the posts I've made about the US Commemorative Coin C&C Sets:

- 1993-94 Thomas Jefferson Coinage & Currency Set
- 1997 Botanic Garden Coinage & Currency Set
- 2001 American Buffalo Coin And Currency Set
- 2004 Lewis & Clark Coinage & Currency Set

A great thing about these sets is the wealth of information they provide regarding the coin's subject (often via a supplementary booklet).

They are often available at very reasonable prices and, IMO, are well worth it!

How many were there? I know at least one is missing.

Agreed! In fact I wish they would make more of these sets; they are some of my favorites.

Actually the are two.
I'm not sure how many different ones were made either.
As an ASE collector, I have 2 in my collection solely because they have ASEs in them.
The 2000 Millennium Coinage and Currency set, here is my item write up on that:
"To celebrate the new Millennium, the US Mint released the United States Millennium Coinage and Currency Set. It contained one bullion 2000 American Silver Eagle, one 2000D Sacagawea dollar coin, and one Series 1999 $1 bill with a serial number beginning with the number "2000". It was discovered that the Sac dollar had a burnished type finish similar to the Goodacre dollars and became highly sought after for a while. The COA, printed on the outer packaging, did indicate that the bullion coin was minted at West Point, although all 2000 bullion was minted at West Point. But the third-party graders will give the implied mint mark and the notation of "Millenium Set" if submitted in the sealed mint wrapper. Original price $39"
I don't have an image of the inside of that set, as mine is sealed. This set is called "Coinage and Currency" vs "Coin and Currency" and I'm not sure why. Because there are 2 coins, is coinage plural for coin?
The other is the 2012 Making American History Coin and Currency set. Here is the write up I have for that:

"The most notable reason for this set was the 150th Anniversary of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, which is why a $5 note was included in this set. In the COA, printed on the back of this set is read, there were several notable
anniversaries for the Mint in 2012. It was also the 220th Anniversary of the US Mint (if you remember above there
was the 1993 "Bicentennial Set" 19 years prior), it was also the 75th Anniversary of the San Fransisco Mints current building, the 75th Anniversary of the opening of the US Depository at Fort Knox, and the 75th Anniversary of the start
of construction on the West Point Mint. The set contained just 2 items. A $5 Federal Reserve Note which had a
serial number beginning in "150", and a Proof American Silver eagle minted in San Fransisco, one of only 2 ways to
obtain the 2012S Proof, the other being the above-mentioned San Fransisco 2 Coin Set. Original issue price $72.95.
I am speculating the mintage to be 56,857, based on total mintage of the S Proof and subtracting the number of reverse proofs as used in the San Fransisco sets."Commems-Collection-Modern:-Index-To-Commemorative-Coin-&-Currency-Sets

@Gilly: I thought you might be thinking about those two. Neither features a commemorative coin, that is why neither was included in my Index.

I previously posted about the 2000 US Millennium Set, you can read it here: 2000 US Millennium Coinage And Currency Set.

I have a post about the Making History Set ready to go, I just need to complete my image scans. It will be posted later this week.

I have another sealed 2012 set.
On either of these two, there's one thing that bothers me. You have no idea what the sealed set has for serial numbers. What if there is a really cool serial number sequence?

I'll bet a nickel the serial numbers begin with "150" - they all do!

Why keep the set sealed? IMO, you can't fully enjoy it if you can't view it! And, FWIW, I haven't seen a meaningful price differential in the marketplace for sealed vs. unsealed sets.

Speculation, mainly. Even though I don't "generally" do graded coins.
In one of the write ups I posted above, I mentioned that I thought the grading companies would put on a label that the ASE is from one of these 2 sets if the original shrink wrap was still on.
I did some checking and that evidently isn't the case. At least right now. That could change, so at this time, I think I'll just keep it sealed. On the 2012 set, I did buy one already opened.
