I was looking for an 1884-P Eagle on ebay. Theoretically a fairly common but low mintage date. I found none. There are three similarly common 1883-S. And then there are 8 "rare" 1884-CC's, starting at $5571 for a details coin, and topping out at $39,375 for an ex Hansen MS61. Reduce the price by a factor of 10 and I might consider it to upgrade the circulated one I bought 20 years ago. Until then other buyers can have them. I'm out. The same goes for the other CC's, and Dahlonegas, and Charlottes that flood ebay these days. It's a stinkin' rich buyer's market for the small branch mints right now. Must be a lot of estates being liquidated. "Two minutes ago I would have sold my chances for a tired dime." Fred Astaire

I must be missing something. How is an 1884-CC Morgan dollar worth those prices? If they truly are I'm ready to sell my 84-CC PCGS slabbed MS-66 with CAC sticker. Maybe I can pay off the house.

Never mind. I see what I missed. Apples and oranges. You're talking EAGLES ($10 gold), and I'm talking comparative base metal.

These coins "flood" ebay because it is essentially "free" advertising for the coins' owners. For ebay it just brings in more lookers to the platform and sometimes they buy stuff. So it's kind of a win/win when a coin sells.

Maybe westernsky, but I see the same thing on dealer sites. And 20 years ago I didn't see them in such abundance. Too many high end coins chasing too few buyers.

An 1884-P Eagle should be about $1290 in MS-61, $1500 in MS-62, and $3225 in MS-63. Check with your local coin dealer they can probably locate one for you on the wholesale market and apply their markup to those prices. 10% is fair.

I've moved a few bullion coins into equivalent lower mintage coins recently fenton. I found an 1884 MS62 Eagle on APMEX for $1550. I looked to see if there were any others on ebay, Collector's Corner and David Lawrence. I found a slew of 1884-CC's, a few 1883-S's but no more P's. In the past this was not a hard coin to find, but apparently a lot of other people are scooping them up too.
