Severe Die Deterioration. This die was super worn, when it struck your coin. I'd keep it for educational purposes.

Interesting - I was thinking someone may have put a socket over the coin and hit it for some reason but then the bottom bust of Jefferson would have been effected, but isn't. So how only the letters were flattened is a bit perplexing. While there is no tell tale signs of damage on the reverse.

One thing to consider is that coins with bad Die Deterioration have a lot of excess metal in the devices. As circulation flattening takes place (including scraping and stretching from coin rolling machines), that can really smear the devices wide.

It's not hard to imagine that with some crushing action, these letters could be even bigger and chunkier than they already are.

I have noticed that the FS is doubled to and the bust and lower hair and ponytail don't have circulation were.
