Cash theft at a retail establishment has always been a problem. But, how much has been stolen from hacking into payment systems and bank accounts? More and more as we move away from cash. I can certainly understand why they prefer non-cash payments to prevent pilfering, but I think the argument could be made that they're no better off in either scenario. Personally, it is much easier to use the card, but I try to use cash at every opportunity - mainly so I can get change!

On the flip side, recent times have shown us that we are all becoming easier targets for thievery even if we never leave home. No one has ever hacked one of my twenties. They may try to take it from me, but that's a different story.

Many places in the UK now don't accept cards. But on my recent cruise I was pleased to find that cash still seems to be dominant in Italy. I was surprised to see my friend in Naples, who loves modern gadgets and does almost everything with her smartphone, paying cash for a meal in a restaurant that definitely accepted card and phone payment. She told me that she preferred using cash and that all service providers and retailers in Italy are still obliged to accept it.

I can see why businesses no longer want to pay workers 25 cents or more a minute ($15/hr) to count out change in fractions of a dollar.

No intention to be snarky. Those who've seen my posts over the years here know I can have a twisted sense of humor now and then. Our community has crusty curmudgeons, gentle numismatists, and stand-up wannabes. It's okay, we are (mostly....) one.

One of the other aspects that people tend to forget is that credit card companies and smartphone apps scrape all that data from your transactions. I find it a little eerie that there are databases of all the places you have eaten, stores you have shopped, items you have purchased. All that information gets traded around in a shadowy corporate digital bazaar, and ultimately gets mated up with your online interactions, store loyalty card data, scraped app data, ad nauseam.

Cash short-circuits all that shadowy corporate monitoring and privacy invasion, which probably drives them crazy, because the data they collect on people is probably just as valuable as the percentage they collect from transactions.

Further on the no-menu restaurant: When the waiter came by, I asked, "if we don't need menus, why do we need you? Why can't we just go over and pick it up at the window like you do?"

That's when we left.

Count me in on the "useable cash" side. Try tapping your phone at the garage sale next time. The venders I deal with don't have a problem when I ask if cash will do. That's why they get my business. Events that don't take cash, I probably would not attend. I don't want to buy my concert t-shirt with plastic.

How interesting. Tax-free cash transactions are still a major force in our economy, No wonder large corporations are working to avoid them.

QR codes don't bother me, especially if I spend less time waiting for a table, get the food quicker and it helps to keep the cost down. I'll strive to do my best to keep up with the times.

As I have said in another topic or two, paying in their app or mobile website (depending on where the QR code lands you) is a plus for me.

I went to purchase a slushie at the gas station the other day. I was going to use the self checkout but there was a sign, "card only" I went to the cashier to pay. I'm not using a card to pay 74 cents for something. I'm not in Gen Z. I can't believe that people use a card for such a small transaction AND THEY NEVER GET A RECEIPT! The faith that they have in all the institutions involved in the transaction that they are going to charge them correctly is staggering. Now, 99.9% of the time they are correct. Just wait until that 74 cent charge shows up as $74.
Plus, if you want me to use a card don't charge me a 2% fee. I refuse to use a debit card for anything. Credit card only.
